Reducing Stress and Stomach Fat

Posted on June 1st, 2008 by admin, under stomach, tips, weight loss.

Stress can wreak havoc on the natural systems of the body. It increases blood pressure, causes changes in hormones, and can cause a multitude of other problems. Failure to regulate stress can lead to a variety of unhealthy behaviors.

Often, the act of eating is a reaction to high levels of stress. Eating releases endorphins that relieve stress, leading to addictive and compulsive behaviors. The additional calories consumed lead to eventual weight gain and the development of excess stomach fat.

The excessive or consistent consumption of alcohol is one method many use to regulate stress. Alcohol is full of empty calories and can lead to weight gain. “Beer bellies” are often associated with the weight gain caused by excessive alcohol consumption. While alcohol may cause temporary feelings of euphoria, its addictive properties cause dependence that causes additional stress.

Workplace stress can lead to constant snacking and overeating. Often, coworkers prepare food for groups and partake in business lunches. The constant stream of unregulated food and meals can lead to weight gain and the addition of belly fat.

Raising children also leads to poor dietary choices and a lack of exercise. The stress brought on by constant parenting leads to hasty meals, reactionary eating, and a higher consumption of food on the go. All of these behaviors lead to excess belly fat.

In addition, life changes such as pregnancy and middle age can cause major changes to metabolism. Stress is also a major factor during these periods, leading to a compound effect that can cause major weight gain and belly fat formation. Taking on a strict diet and exercise plan can help to fight these effects.

While weight loss methods can reverse the effects of stress on belly fat and weight gain, it does not eliminate stress altogether. Physical fitness is an incredible way to help the body naturally regulate stress and to reduce anxiety. Additional steps are necessary to change your overall stress outlook. You might consider stress reduction or anxiety relief techniques such as Yoga. Reducing the intake of stimulants, such as caffeine and nicotine can also help to reduce stress.

Changing your lifestyle in order to reduce stress, through relaxation periods and time for pursuing interests, can cause drastic reductions in stress. Combining a new plan for both weight loss and stress reduction will set you on the path to losing anxiety, stress, and belly fat.
